R Programming Challenge

Welcome to the R Programming Challenge

What is this challenge?
This is a set of 4 modules designed for those who are brand new to R, a popular free, open-source programming language used for data analysis and visualization. Each module should take about 30-45 minutes and provides a guide to build upon the knowledge you have learned from the previous module.

By completing this challenge, you will be able to:

  1. Describe what R and RStudio are, as well as some of the advantages of using R.
  2. Install and begin using both R and RStudio on your computer.
  3. Gain familiarity with the layout of RStudio.
  4. Understand and practice some of the basics of R including importing and using built-in datasets, assigning variables, and playing around with arguments.
  5. Install and become familiar with R packages like dplyr, tidyr, and ggplot2.
  6. Do simple manipulation and clean up of datasets
  7. Create basic visualizations using ggplot2.
  8. Export your visualizations to use in presentations, website, posters,

This self-paced, 100% online challenge is designed to be completed over the course of 4 weeks, with 30 min to 1 hour of work per week, and is aimed at supporting The Ohio State University faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate students.

There is no deadline for completing these modules, and participants are encouraged to work at their own pace. The R Programming Challenge will remain available and be updated to provide new content and activities as necessary.
