Book Overview

Summary

As a young boy in the 1880s, Julio C. Tello, bravely spent days exploring caves and ancient burial grounds in the Peruvian Andes. He became known for his valor, earning the nickname, Sharuko, or “brave” in Quechua, his native language.  He went on to become the country’s first Indigenous archeologist, who’s invaluable discoveries proved that Peruvian culture was born from its very own soil. His bravery, curiosity/exploration, tenacity, and pride he felt for his Indigenous culture made him an icon for Peru and Latin America as whole.

Notable Quote

“Before [his] discovery, scientists believed that Indigenous Peruvian culture had been introduced from Central America, Mexico, and even China. Julio had the courage to argue against this popular belief, and eventually the scientific world realized he was right. Peruvian culture had grown from its own soil.” – from the book Sharuko
