Company Ownership

Note: Determining a company's ownership is the first step to conducting research. If a company is public, more information will be available as the company is required to report its finances, while a private company does not have to report any financial information. It is also helpful to know a company's place in a hierarchy (parent company, subsidiary, etc.). A number of databases will include this information in a company profile page.

Extensive company profiles. Particular points of interest include the Long Business Description (which often includes information on business strategies and segments), Investment Research reports, biographical information on key professionals and board members and a Quick Comps section with peers.
D&B Hoovers This link opens in a new window
Company profiles often include SWOT analysis, analyst reports, information on geographic and/or business segments, ratios, and a 'Triggers' section which filters out news events of particular relevance.
Value Line This link opens in a new window
This database is focused on investment information. Company pages will include a financial strength rating, valuation data, analyst commentary, industry analysis, information on peers and more.
Morningstar This link opens in a new window
Company profiles include detailed market information, as this is primarily an investment database. A detailed stock analysis page will dive into business strategy and outlook, risks, and more. Insiders section includes executive compensation and Shareholders section includes overview of major shareholders (funds and institutions).
