Manga Open House

(12th century animation)

Written by Isao Takahata, film director and co-founder (with Hayao Miyazaki) of Studio Ghibli. Takahata drew inspiration from the 12th century reproduction scrolls displayed to the left.

In 1921 manga reporters from Japanese newspapers took a trip on the Eastern Highway and made sketches for this scroll – as a way of promoting “manga”

In Japanese mythology a giant catfish (namazu) lives underground and causes earthquakes.

Considered one of the leaders of Japan’s avant-garde movements in pre-war Japan, Yanase was a Western-style painter and cartoonist. In 1925 he became the cartoonist for the Proletarian Times (Musansha Shimbun), the legal newspaper of the then-illegal Japan Communist Party.

This is a “kamishibai” picture card, used in a traditional Japanese style of storytelling that was once popular as street entertainment. Many famous manga artists started out drawing “kamishibai” in the 1940s and 50s.
