Licensed online library resources are restricted from viewing outside the campus network. There are several ways to access licensed resources from off-campus:
Please note that VPN authentication will not provide authentication for most library resources and is not recommended to be used in combination with the library Off-campus sign in.
Interlibrary Loan and publisher license agreements limit access to the Libraries electronic journals, databases, and books to current faculty, staff, and students of The Ohio State University.
Non-OSU users (Guest users) visiting OSU campus libraries can be issued a Guest Authentication account from staff at Library Circulation Desks to use public computers when available. Guest users must at time of request show a valid picture ID such as a U.S. driver's license, State of Ohio ID, School ID, or passport. The guest account authorization is only valid for the location where it is issued by the user. It is good for a set amount of time and will automatically expire at the end of that time period. Users are required to follow the policy on Responsible Use of University Computing and Network Resources.
To use the OSU "Find It" button, off-campus users must use Scholar settings to ensure routing through the proxy.
In the Google Scholar results list, click the Find It! link to determine if online access is provided by OSU Libraries or OhioLINK. This link may be under MORE for some results. A Find It! link may not be offered for every available link, as Google Scholar may offer several sources for the same citation.
Use Article Express to request an electronic scan (PDF) of articles or book chapters (but not entire books) held in the OSU Library collections and the collections of other libraries around the world. Visit Interlibrary Services to request any article, book and other material not available in either the OSU catalog or OhioLINK catalog.
If an item is not available electronically through the library catalog or interlibrary services and you cannot visit a OSU Library location (any Columbus or Wooster campus location or any regional campus location) to pick up an requested item, we offer distance user off-campus delivery:
If you are located off-campus but within the state of Ohio, please use the OhioLINK catalog to request OSU Library and OhioLINK materials for pick-up at any of the 80+ OhioLINK member libraries around the state.
If you are located off-campus outside the state of Ohio but within the United States, please choose “Distance User (Out of State)” as your pick-up location when you request items from the OSU Library catalog, OhioLINK catalog or SearchOhio catalog. We will confirm your delivery address via email and then send you the items you requested. Materials are sent to you at no charge via UPS (delivery signature required). To return items, you must ship them back to OSU Thompson Library at your expense via a traceable delivery system (such as UPS, FedEx, or USPS with Tracking).
