OSU Wireless

The Ohio State University provides wireless data network services for OSU students, faculty, staff, and guests. The wireless network is designed and maintained by the Office of the Chief Information Officer.

Two primary wireless networks are available throughout the university:

  • osuwireless, an encrypted network for students, faculty, staff.
  • WiFi@OSU, a multi-purposed unencrypted network that provides guests with internet access and helps students, faculty, and staff connect to the encrypted network, osuwireless.

To access licensed library materials on campus you need to be connected to the osuwireless data network.

Additionally, eduroam access is now available in most locations on all campuses.

Off-campus Access

Licensed online library resources are restricted from viewing outside the campus network. There are several ways to access licensed resources from off-campus:

  • Use the off-campus sign in through the library homepage for the most reliable way to access licensed resources from off-campus. You will be prompted for your name.# and password. You should only need to sign in once per session.
  • Use an OSU Libraries' Bookmarklet / Browser Extension within your browser. Here is more Information on using a Bookmarklet.
  • Many publishers/vendors permit access directly from their website with OSU credentials in which case you can use proxy authentication to access the resource. Place this string at the beginning of the vendor’s URL:[enter vendor’s URL here]. Example: You will be prompted for your name.# and password.

Please note that VPN authentication will not provide authentication for most library resources and is not recommended to be used in combination with the library Off-campus sign in.

Library Access for OSU Visitors and the Public

Interlibrary Loan and publisher license agreements limit access to the Libraries electronic journals, databases, and books to current faculty, staff, and students of The Ohio State University.

Non-OSU users (Guest users) visiting OSU campus libraries can be issued a Guest Authentication account from staff at Library Circulation Desks to use public computers when available. Guest users must at time of request show a valid picture ID such as a U.S. driver's license, State of Ohio ID, School ID, or passport. The guest account authorization is only valid for the location where it is issued by the user. It is good for a set amount of time and will automatically expire at the end of that time period. Users are required to follow the policy on Responsible Use of University Computing and Network Resources.

Google Scholar

To use the OSU "Find It" button, off-campus users must use Scholar settings to ensure routing through the proxy.

  • Go to Google Scholar (
  • Click on the menu button (top left).
  • Click on Settings and then on Library Links.
  • Search for Ohio State University.
  • Check the box beside The Ohio State University Libraries-Find it at OSU.
  • Click Save button at the bottom right.

In the Google Scholar results list, click the Find It! link to determine if online access is provided by OSU Libraries or OhioLINK. This link may be under MORE for some results.  A Find It! link may not be offered for every available link, as Google Scholar may offer several sources for the same citation.
