Publish in an open access journal

You can also choose to publish in an open access journal (and some funders require it).  Many are listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (doaj.org).  Use the checklist at thinkchecksubmit.org to help evaluate the quality of a journal before you submit.

Some OA journals charge fees to publish (commonly known as article processing charges or APCs) and some do not.  Be sure to read the terms carefully on the publisher's website.

For more insight, see this brief post:  Making the Choice: Open Access vs. Traditional Journals.

Journal Citation Reports (Web of Science) and Scopus both let you display OA journals by checking a box when you search for journals by subject category.  The example here is from JCR.
