African World

Librarian's Choice

Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience is the recommended resource for researching “African World” ideas and topics.

Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois began work on an “Encyclopedia Africana” in 1909 but this project was delayed by pressing civil rights events and the absence of financial funding. Finally in 1999

Dr. Kwame Anthony Appiah and Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. fulfilled his wish with the publication of “Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience.” An expanded second print edition was published in 2005. The complete editions are fully accessible through the Oxford African American Studies Center database which includes multimedia images, video, audio music, and text.
