Censorship is Increasing

In a 2024 release the American Library Association Office of Intellectual Freedom reported that the majority of censorship attempts are organized groups or movements. As stated by ALA, "pressure groups and government entities that include elected officials, board members, and administrators" account for 72% of censorship demands in public and school libraries (ALA).

Chart depicts percentage of total titles challenged in the U.S. by year. The chart begins with the year 2001 and goes until 2024. 

 

The ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom also writes that "research suggests that for each challenge reported there are as many as four or five which go unreported." (Source: ALA 100 most frequently challenged books by decade)
