What is Composting?

Composting is the process of recycling organic matter such as food scraps, leaves, and animal products into a nutrient-rich soil amendment.

Items that are compostable:

  • Food and vegetable scraps
  • Coffee Grounds and tea leaves
  • Meat, bones, and shellfish*
  • Dairy*
  • Eggshells
  • Bread
  • Soiled paper napkins and paper towels
  • Grass clippings/yard trim

 

*Note: Not recommended for at-home composting that you plan to turn into fertilizer

Composting at OSU

Ohio State University students, faculty, and staff can participate by properly disposing of food waste by putting it into the correct labeled bins in OSU dining halls and cafés. Just look for the green receptacle labeled "Compost." You can also pick up your own composting bin to keep in your dorm, apartment, or off-campus home!
