Celebrating Phillis Wheatley Thompson Library Display

This display celebrates the 250th anniversary of the publication of Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral by Phillis Wheatley in 1773. Wheatley’s Poems was the first book Celebrating Phillis Wheatley published by an African American writer. The book’s appearance had immediate reverberations around the Atlantic and serves as a foundational text in American literature. Writers and artists of color have engaged with and been inspired by Wheatley continuously over the centuries and up to the present day. This display was curated by Molly Farrell, Associate Professor in the Department of English.
