Invisibility by Design

INVISIBILITY BY DESIGN examines Japanese women's Internet-based entrepreneurship in the late 1990s. Disadvantaged by a long recession, and entrenched in a historically patriarchal and discriminatory labor marketplace, many Japanese women in the late 1990s and early 2000s turned to Internet commerce as an alternative to the traditional labor market. Drawing from Marxist and neo-Marxist theories of labor, as well as ethnographic research with Japanese women bloggers, net idols, cell phone novelists, and online traders, Gabriella Lukács's book explores how, in the context of Japanese women's online labor practices, the search for meaningful work drove innovations in capitalist accumulation--in this case, Internet-driven labor and market practices.

My Brother's Husband

From one of Japan's most notable manga artists: a heartbreaking and redemptive tale of mourning and acceptance that compares and contrasts the contemporary nature of gay tolerance in the East and the West. Yaichi is a work-at-home suburban dad in contemporary Tokyo, married to wife Natsuki, father to young daughter Kana. Their lives are suddenly upended with the arrival at their doorstep of a hulking, affable Canadian named Mike Flanagan, who declares himself the widower of Yaichi's estranged gay twin, Ryoji. Mike is on a quest to explore Ryoji's past, and the family reluctantly but dutifully takes him in. What follows is an unprecedented, revelatory look at and journey into the largely still-closeted Japanese gay culture: how it's been affected by the West, and how the next generation has the chance to change the preconceptions of and prejudices against it.

Recreating Japanese Men

The essays in this groundbreaking book explore the meanings of manhood in Japan from the seventeenth to the twenty-first centuries. Recreating Japanese Men examines a broad range of attitudes regarding properly masculine pursuits and modes of behavior. It charts breakdowns in traditional and conventional societal roles and the resulting crises of masculinity. Contributors address key questions about Japanese manhood ranging from icons such as the samurai to marginal men including hermaphrodites, robots, techno-geeks, rock climbers, shop clerks, soldiers, shoguns, and more. In addition to bringing historical evidence to bear on definitions of masculinity, contributors provide fresh analyses on the ways contemporary modes and styles of masculinity have affected Japanese men's sense of gender as authentic and stable.
