Nonprofits and NGOs

This guide will help you research nonprofit organizations, the nonprofit sector and NGOs.

Getting Started

OSU Libraries subscribes to many licensed resources. These resources are a good place to start for many types of research, but they are only a few of the resources to which the Libraries subscribes. If you are researching on the internet at large, please be aware that there are an increasing number of poorly researched and/or AI-generated reports, data, and analysis available. You should carefully scrutinize any and all resources you are considering using. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions as you begin your research.

What is a nonprofit?

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, "A nonprofit organization is one that qualifies for tax-exempt status by the IRS because its mission and purpose are to further a social cause and provide a public benefit. Nonprofit organizations include hospitals, universities, national charities, and foundations." (You can read more on their site.)

NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) is generally the term used for nonprofits outside of the United States.

News

When you're just getting started with your research, it might be a good idea to do a general news search to get an idea of what's going on within your 'industry' and/or the geographic area wherein you might like to operate.
