If you have questions about accessing, licensing, or general technical support for products available through our Esri education institutional agreement, please email esri-support@osu.edu. We will do our best to respond to your inquiry within two business days.

Overview

This page contains information about accessing and licensing some of Esri's other desktop applications available through our education institutional agreement, including:

ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap)

ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap) is Esri's legacy desktop GIS application. ArcGIS 10.8.2 is the current release of ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap), and there are no plans to release future versions. ArcMap will enter Mature Support in March 2024, and we have been informed by Esri that it will no longer be included with our education institutional agreement as of our July 1, 2024 renewal.

We strongly recommended that existing ArcMap users migrate to ArcGIS Pro as far in advance of July 1, 2024 as possible, as ArcMap will no longer be available through our license after this date. Review Esri's documentation on Migrating from ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro for additional resources, and see the ArcGIS Pro page on this guide for information about using ArcGIS Pro at Ohio State. If you have questions or concerns regarding migrating from ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro, please email esri-support@osu.edu.

Download Installation Files

Installation files for ArcGIS Desktop are made available through Ohio State's SharePoint organization, and you will be prompted to log in with your university credentials to download the files linked below. Download and install both files. Install ArcGIS 10.8.2 first, then install background geoprocessing. Review Esri's documentation on ArcGIS Desktop 10.8 system requirements before installing.

Older Versions: If you have a need for a specific older version of ArcGIS Desktop, please email esri-support@osu.edu.

Single Use Licensing

For individual users, single use licensing is the preferred method for configuring ArcGIS Desktop. The single use license file provided is valid for one calendar year based on our renewal cycle.

Run the ArcGIS Desktop installer, and follow the steps below to authorize your installation with the single use license file provided.

  1. Start ArcGIS Administrator.
  2. In the Desktop section, select the option for Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use.
  3. Click Authorize Now to start the Software Authorization Wizard.
  4. Choose the option "I have received an authorization file from Esri and am now ready to finish the authorization process." When prompted, select the license file you downloaded from SharePoint.
  5. Choose the option "Authorize with Esri now using the internet."
  6. Replace the pre-filled personal and employer/role information with your own information as appropriate. Put your campus location information in for address, phone, etc.
  7. Click Next to accept the pre-filled product authorization codes generated from the license file.
  8. Select all extensions you want to authorize, and click Next.
  9. When prompted to evaluate non-licensed extensions, click Next to skip this step.
  10. Click Next. The information in the Software Authorization Wizard is sent to Esri. When it is validated, licenses are generated and returned to your machine.
  11. When you are finished, test the license by launching ArcMap.

Concurrent Use Licensing

Concurrent use licensing is available in cases where college/department IT staff need to manage multiple installations in computer labs and/or virtual environments. For instructions, see Esri's documentation on Authorizing ArcGIS Desktop Software, and use the following settings:

  • Select a Product: Advanced (ArcInfo) Concurrent Use
  • Define License Manager for Concurrent Use Products: esri.service.ohio-state.edu

ArcGIS CityEngine

ArcGIS CityEngine is an advanced 3D modeling software for creating massive, interactive, and immersive urban environments in less time than with traditional modeling techniques. The cities you create using ArcGIS CityEngine can be based on real-world geographic information system (GIS) data or showcase a fictional city of the past, present, or future.
