A Beginner's Guide to SciFinder

An introduction into what content is available in SciFinder and how to go about finding the information you need.

Alerts

Do you have a search that you need to repeat routinely? Or a substance of interest that you want to keep updated on? Set an alert so that the search runs automatically on a frequency of your choosing! When on a results page, select the Save button and then the Save and Alert:

Red box around the bookmark icon that appears on the right hand side above the first result. The "Save and Alert" option is highlighted.

You'll then see the Save Results menu. Here you will name your Alert, add any tags of your choosing, and toggle the Alerts option on. You can select to have the results delivered Weekly, Monthly, or As Available.

As Available means that if there is a content update with results that match the alert query, it will be delivered after that content update. If set to Weekly, if an alert is set on a Wednesday, results will be delivered the next Wednesday. If no results matching the query are retrieved, then an alert will not be delivered.

You can also add emails of additional people you may want to receive the alert notifications.

You will receive an email when alert results are ready to be viewed. In SciFinder, you'll see that the Bell icon will have a yellow exclamation point next to it. You can view individual alert results, or combine multiple sets into one. See this link for further information.

Unfortunately, you don't have the ability to edit the search query used in an alert. If you want to modify the search query or add/subtract filters, you'll have to set an entirely new alert.

You do have the ability to change the frequency of the alert or add/subtract emails of those receiving the alert. If you navigate into your saved items, you can filter to those that have alerts set (this is helpful if you have a lot of saved items):

The bell icon next to the alert allows you to change the frequency and emails, while the ... allows you to edit the name, add tags, or delete the alert.

At the bottom of the Filter Behavior menu on a result page, you'll see the Filter Content Report section:

It can only be downloaded as a Excel file. If no filters have been applied, then it will default to all filter values as selectable. It will not be able to be downloaded until something is selected. If filters have been applied, it will default to only download the content of applied filters. You can switch between the two in order to customize what filter content you want to download.

Here's an example of a reference result set filter content selections for a set that had no filters selected. You can see that the Download button is not clickable because nothing has been selected yet:

Filter Content popup menu. None of the filters are selected so the download button is grayed out.
