Regular and Substantial Interaction in Distance Learning

Student Presentations

If you want your students to record presentations, here are some options:

Discussions

If you want your students to participate in class discussions, you have several options:

  • Asynchronous Discussions: For courses in CarmenCanvas, you can use the built-in discussion feature, which also allows you to assign students to smaller discussion groups:
  • Synchronous Discussions: You can use Zoom, which includes an option for assigning participants to breakout rooms.
  • Other options could include using either Onedrive or Microsoft Teams to share a document with discussion questions. Students could add their individual replies. 

Carmen Discussion Boards

Discussions via Carmen

Use the Discussions tool in your course to:

  • Encourage users to share thoughts on course material with their peers.

  • Set up forums for users to ask questions.

  • Post questions for the class to debate.

  • Discuss the answers to an assignment.

 

Quizzes or Exams

If you want your students to complete a written quiz or exam, your options include:

  • CarmenCanvas Quizzes: You can create multiple choice, multiple answer, true/false, and essay questions, among many other types. How Do I Create a Quiz?
  • OneDrive: You can upload the quiz or exam handout to Onedrive, students can download, complete, and upload. 

Group Assignments

If you had planned to have students work on an assignment or project together, you have a few options:

Assignment Redesign Options

Database or Online Searching Assignments: If you want your students to practice searching databases or completing other types of online searches, they can:

  • Create a narrated screencast of their search process. Be sure to provide guidelines on what they need to demonstrate in the video, as well as clear time limits!
  • Lower Tech: Students can take screenshots of their search and use these images to create an annotated Word document or PPT outlining their search process.
